What this desk is for, in about two minutes

Several newsrooms cover the same event. This desk reads all of them and holds up the places where their accounts cannot all be true — then says which kind of disagreement it is, because the two kinds are not the same problem.

The one number

89% of the cross-outlet splits this desk has found are not fights about the facts. The outlets agree on what happened and disagree only on what to call it. A fact can be checked and the disagreement ends; a frame cannot, because there is nothing underneath it to check — only a choice about how you should feel, made for you, before you reached the verb. The standing measurement is the Framing Index.

How to read an audit

Every piece ends in Sources & Exhibits: each outlet numbered, each quoted span reproduced verbatim from a frozen snapshot at the character offset shown, with a link to the original and to the snapshot. Click any outlet name inside an exhibit to jump there. Nothing on this site asks you to take its word for anything — that is the entire design.

Then

Method is how the desk decides what counts. Corrections is where it has been wrong. Masthead is who runs it. Right of reply is for the newsrooms it writes about. Subscribe is once a week, one unsubscribe link, honoured on the first click.
