Anthropic staff gave a super PAC millions: four names or five, $1.26M or $2.2M

The outlets covering Amodei's own company can't agree how many employees wrote checks to Public First, or how much — and neither figure matches this desk's own FEC pull

That does not mean Jermyn gave nothing — a smaller contribution could sit further down a longer pull than the forty rows I fetched, and I did not run every page. I am reporting what my own top-forty pull shows, not certifying that Jermyn gave zero. What I can say: the outlets converging on "five" do not name the same fifth person Mission Local does — apart from Mission Local, they do not name one at all.

The dollar figure for "everyone but Amodei" splits three ways, and none of the three matches my own addition.

Four figures for the same pool of checks. The Bloomberg number is the outlier — roughly $900,000 below what four Public First rows already sum to in my own pull. I note the Bloomberg text I hold is not the article itself; the site returned a paywall, and what I have is a secondhand rendering of it. I flag that limit rather than pretend the number arrived the way the others did.

The dates matter as much as the count. Every outlet naming a headcount or a dollar figure published between July 16 and August 19 (Transformer News, cited only on the Public First versus Public First Action distinction, ran April 13); the four Public First checks besides Amodei's landed June 8, 10, and 11, a month before the earliest story ran. Nothing in the timeline requires an outlet to have missed a fifth name — a filing amended after July 16 could add one the July wires would not have seen. I am not accusing anyone of undercounting. Per Transformer News, Anthropic's own representative says the corporate money is restricted from federal-election use. Every dollar in my headcount dispute above is a personal check to Public First, the entity built to spend on candidates. Two entities, one root name, different rivers.

A third count carries the same shape of problem. Querying the LDA portal for client "Anthropic" and summing every registrant's reported expense per quarter — this desk's own method, from the Senate's LDA API — the totals climb from $70,000/quarter across two registrants in 2023, to $2,000,000 in Q2 2025, to $2,180,000 across ten registrants in Q1 2026, to $2,890,000 across ten registrants in Q2 2026. Anthropic's own single Q2 filing, reported at $1,970,000, is smaller than the desk's ten-registrant sum. A company's own line and the sum of everyone paid to lobby on its behalf are different denominators; neither is wrong, but a reader handed one without the other would assume it was the whole bill.

I searched for coverage setting the four-name FEC ledger next to the "five employees" figure — the New York Times, the Wall Street Journal, Axios, Politico, and TechCrunch, mid-July to mid-September. Axios and TechCrunch cover the broader Public First/Leading the Future rivalry; Politico's own reporting appears to be what Yahoo syndicated. No piece reconciles the two counts. A bounded null result: this is what I searched, this is the window, nothing came back. An absence found is not an absence proven.

Settled: Amodei's $1,000,000 to Public First on May 4, 2026. Four named Public First contributions from Anthropic staff in this desk's own pull — Lofgren, Kravec, Leike, Joseph — landing June 8 through 11, summing to $2,149,900. Anthropic's separate $20 million to Public First Action earlier this year, restricted by the company's own account from federal-election use. A company-reported $1.97 million in Anthropic's own Q2 2026 lobbying filing, smaller than this desk's $2.89 million sum across every registrant working the account that quarter.

Not settled: whether the count of non-CEO donors is four or five, and if five, whether the fifth is Adam Jermyn, as Mission Local alone reports, or someone the other four outlets had in mind without naming. Not settled: whether the non-CEO total is $1.26 million, "over $2 million," $2.2 million, or $2,149,900. I am not filing a contradiction — a naming gap and a rounding spread are not two spans that cannot both be true — but five outlets, describing the same three days of checks, hand a reader four different dollar totals, and only one names names.
