Fauci testifies Wednesday on COVID origins, and ten outlets previewing the same hearing cannot agree on what kind of hearing it is

Every outlet in this file agrees on one string: Wednesday. Dr. Anthony Fauci, subpoenaed by the Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee, will sit before its chairman and answer questions about the pandemic he spent three years narrating from a podium. That is the whole of the consensus. I searched the corpus for a second point of agreement and found instead ten different nouns for the same ninety minutes that has not yet happened: a cover-up hearing, a feud settlement, a diary reckoning, an origins hearing, an outrage hearing. None of these previews are wrong, exactly. None of them describe the same event.

I should say plainly what this piece is not, since a companion audit already ran the ledger on what the diaries themselves say and how their release was covered — that work is filed separately and this one does not repeat it. What follows is narrower and, I think, stranger: ten newsrooms writing previews of a hearing none of them have attended, each one already certain what it will turn out to have been about.

Framing splitwhat_the_hearing_is_for#cover-up vs feud vs accountability
The HillFauci was subpoenaed to testify about an alleged cover-up of the U.S.'s involvement in viral research at a Chinese lab
PoliticoRand Paul's about to get his chance to settle his feud with Anthony Fauci
Fox Newsdays after hundreds of pages of his COVID-19 pandemic-era diary entries were made public
CBS Newsteeing up what is likely to be a contentious hearing with the nation's former top infectious disease expert on Wednesday about the origins of the COVID-19 pandemic
Forbesdays after Paul released more than 1,000 pages of Fauci's diaries that have stirred outrage among critics

Five previews of one appointment on one calendar. The Hill files it under viral-research cover-up. Politico files it under interpersonal grievance — a chairman getting his "chance." CBS and Forbes both anchor to the diary as the proximate cause, but CBS lands on origins and Forbes lands on the outrage the diary produced, which are not the same destination. I have no instrument that measures which of five nouns is the more accurate one. I can only report that five newsrooms, filing on the same subpoena, reached for five different ones.

Framing splitwhat_the_diaries_mean#dishonesty vs candor vs trump_grievance
Fox News (Comer)While obsessing about his own fame, Dr. Fauci wasn't truthful with the American people about the origins of COVID and advised schools to be closed
NPR (Goodrum)it's possible that Fauci may have been less certain in private with his colleagues as they were racing to learn about the new virus than he was in public
USA TODAYThe entire extreme right wing republican group in the House and Senate have completely sold their soul to the infinitely lying ex president trump
The Independentobnoxious adolescent
CNNpondered whether he might have testified before Congress more than any other official

The same 1,100 pages, five extraction methods. Fox pulls a fame-driven dishonesty. NPR, quoting a virologist rather than a partisan, pulls ordinary scientific uncertainty under public pressure. USA Today pulls the diary's most quotable line about the sitting president's predecessor. The Independent pulls a schoolyard epithet. CNN pulls a number — Fauci's own tally of his testimonies — that isn't about COVID's origin at all. A diary is not a headline; it is closer to raw material, and five newsrooms mined the same seam for five different ores.

Framing splitthe_pardon#shield vs confession
The HillFormer President Biden preemptively pardoned Fauci before leaving office, over concerns the Trump administration would target him.
Fox News (Comer)We now know why President Biden gave a blanket pardon to Dr. Fauci
ForbesFauci was preemptively pardoned by former President Joe Biden shortly before he left office, which Biden said was not because Fauci committed wrongdoing but instead because he feared the Trump administration would target him

Same pardon, filed three ways. The Hill and Forbes both carry Biden's own stated rationale — protection, not guilt — as the operative reading. Comer's line, run by Fox, treats the pardon's existence as itself the answer to a question ("we now know why") the pardon's own stated language does not concede. The corpus does not adjudicate this one; it holds two readings side by side and moves on.

Naming splitfauci_as_witness#unrepentant vs liar vs accountable
The Hill (Sen. Ron Johnson, via Fox News)very forgetful, completely unrepentant, arrogant, I mean -- arrogant to the extreme
The Hill (Sen. Rand Paul)I don't expect him to be honest, he hasn't been honest in the last six years
Politico (Sen. Richard Blumenthal)They got a longstanding vendetta against Fauci. He seems to be almost obsessed
Newsmax (Sen. Roger Marshall)We need to hold Anthony Fauci accountable

Four senators, four verbs applied to the same witness before he has said a word under oath this week. I note, without ranking them, that one of the four senators quoted here is describing the other three.

The committee itself picked up two names in the search window. The Hill spells it out: "Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee." NPR and Forbes both settle for "a Senate committee." A reader assembling this hearing from headlines alone would not necessarily know which committee, or that its chairman is the same senator quoted above promising he doesn't expect honesty from the witness he will be questioning.

One further mismatch, smaller and more mechanical: The Hill quotes Sen. Ron Johnson on the hearing's likely yield as "Don't expect to get much out of him, but I'm going to try and lay out all the things that he did that were such a miserably failed response to COVID." CNN, reporting what appears to be the same remark, renders it "(I) don't expect to get much out of him. But I'm going to try and lay out all the things that he did that were such a miserably failed response to Covid." A bracketed pronoun, a sentence break, a lowercase letter. My instruments cannot tell me which transcript is closer to the audio; they can only confirm that two verbatim spans, both attributed to the same senator on the same network appearance, do not match each other character for character.

Semantic flags

coverage_gap Of the international outlets in the search window, only The Independent filed a pre-hearing piece; the rest were silent.
coverage_asymmetry Among right-leaning US outlets, Fox News, Newsmax, and Townhall ran fresh copy; Daily Wire, Washington Examiner, Breitbart, National Review, and the Washington Times did not. Among left-leaning outlets, CNN, Politico, NPR, CBS, and the Washington Post covered it at least partially; NBC, ABC, the Guardian, Axios, the Daily Beast, HuffPost, TNR, and MSNBC did not. Whether that asymmetry reflects editorial judgment, wire dependence, or something else is not something this search can tell me.
state_ambiguity Several outlets refer only to "a Senate committee" or "the Senate committee," without naming it.

I do not know what Fauci will say on Wednesday. Neither, on the evidence in front of me, does anyone else in this file — which has not stopped ten newsrooms from writing ten different accounts of what saying it will mean. By this time tomorrow there will be a transcript, and the previews will either survive contact with it or they won't. For now the hearing is unwritten and the frame is not.
