Democratic FCC commissioner on Trump's Kristen Welker threat: 'Dangerous'

Anna Gomez, a Democratic commissioner for the Federal Communications Commission (FCC), on Sunday described President Trump's threat to report NBC News's Kristen Welker as "dangerous."

Trump signaled the "Meet the Press" host could face an FCC probe after she reportedly said the candidates he endorsed have received mixed results during the midterm primary cycle.

"As I've said many times, the FCC has no authority to punish journalists this administration doesn't like," Gomez wrote on social platform X. "These threats to press freedom are dangerous. They undermine the foundation of our democracy, and they have no place in it."

CNN's Brian Stelter reported on social media that Welker talked about Trump's "mixed" endorsement results during a preshow live shot on WRC-TV, NBC's Washington, D.C., affiliate.

"He, of course, has endorsed a slate of candidates in the primaries," the NBC host said. "He's had some mixed results, but most recently, his pick of Sen. Darline Graham, of course, the sister of the late Sen. Lindsey Graham, was successful in her primary battle, so now she takes on Dr. Annie Andrews in South Carolina."

Trump asked on Truth Social, in response to the remarks, "How can anyone be allowed to say this, working for freely given Public Airwaves?"

"Because of this purposeful inaccuracy, she will be reported to the FCC for rebuke or punishment," the president continued. "Unfortunately, she is not the only one. The Radical Left News is going out of their way to harass, demean, and libel anything 'TRUMP.'"

But some Republican candidates endorsed by Trump have lost their primary races, including Rep. Cory Mills (R-Fla.) in his reelection bid to Republican TV anchor Ryan Elijah. Rep. Andy Ogles (R-Tenn.) and Michigan House candidate Amir Hassan (R) also lost their respective contests.

Trump has sparred with Welker before. The president abruptly ended an in-person interview with her in June after he claimed without evidence that the California gubernatorial primary was "rigged."

His threat to report Welker to the FCC comes after Disney and ABC last week sued the agency, arguing that the Trump administration is attempting to censor journalists by urging the commission to conduct an early review of the news outlet's broadcasting licenses.

"I have long called on companies to push back against this kind of government intimidation, and I'm glad Disney has shown courage and stepped up," Gomez told MeidasTouch last week, praising that ABC "stepped up" to sue the FCC and FCC Commissioner Brendan Carr.
