U.S. Official: Trade Deal's Failure Is a 'Missed Opportunity for Canada'

A trade deal between the United States and Canada failed in what is being called a "missed opportunity" on behalf of America's northern neighbor. U.S. Trade Representative Jamieson Greer stated after the deal's collapse that "Canada declined to finalize the trade deal under the terms agreed earlier this week." He characterized the breakdown as resulting from "new demands and walk backs of other commitments by Canada" that "upended the careful balance reached in the past days." The failed negotiations will result in Canada facing 50 percent tariffs on $20 billion worth of its products, according to the Associated Press. Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney said the negotiation results had "not been enough to meet our objectives for Canadians." He blamed Washington officials for the outcome, stating "Last-minute changes in the U.S. proposed terms were unfair, uneconomic" and suspended negotiations, directing negotiators to return to Ottawa. Carney pledged Canada would match incoming tariffs "dollar for dollar." The USTR emphasized that Canada has historically enjoyed favorable market access and that the U.S. offered "significant tariff reductions on steel, aluminum, autos, and lumber," plus a "historic economic and national security partnership" involving export controls and digital trade cooperation. The USTR concluded: "This is a missed opportunity for Canada to partner with the United States, which is the fastest growing economy in the G7."
