Carney: Canada will enact retaliatory US tariffs starting September 8
The prime minister spoke hours after the US imposed 50 percent tariffs on nearly $20bn worth of Canadian goods. "You're at war when you get attacked. We got attacked." Carney "promised to issue retaliatory, 'dollar-for-dollar' tariffs" Retaliation begins September 8, targeting imports "like steel, dairy, appliances, agricultural equipment, paper and electronics" Carney: "We pursued every opportunity to reach an agreement that protects Canadian workers and their families" Carney: "We take this step reluctantly." Carney: the US "asked too much and they offered too little" Carney: new terms were "uneconomic, unfair, and undermined the net benefits for Canada" Carney: "its signature was written in pencil." Carney: "We can't control the storm that blows in from Washington."
