Meta is on trial - again. Here's what to know about the case brought by dozens of states

PBS NewsHour · back to the audit
A multi-state court case against the parent company of Facebook and Instagram opened Tuesday and could affect how kids interact with social media. Twenty-nine attorneys general from both parties are involved; the portion at issue is led by California, Colorado, Kentucky and New Jersey. The states allege Meta used 'psychologically manipulative' features to keep children scrolling, deceived the public, published 'profoundly misleading reports' on harmful experiences, and refuses to drop 'known harmful features.' Meta says states are seeking $1.4 trillion (per Reuters), roughly equal to Meta's market cap. Meta denies each and every allegation, disputes the science and legal theories, claims no evidence its products are 'addictive,' and cites Section 230 and the First Amendment as protections.
