Disney Goes To War With Trump's FCC Over ABC, Jimmy Kimmel
The Walt Disney Company and ABC sued the Trump administration's Federal Communications Commission on Tuesday, accusing the agency of violating the company's First Amendment rights through an unprecedented early review of its broadcast licenses.
Disney and ABC sued the Trump FCC, arguing its early review of eight ABC-owned stations' broadcast licenses is retaliation for programming the administration dislikes. The stations weren't due for renewal until 2028 at the earliest, and Disney says the thirty-day filing window is unreasonable for applications that normally take months. The company seeks a court order blocking the FCC's actions and calls the moves an "existential threat" to its First Amendment rights. The dispute centers partly on Jimmy Kimmel, whom Trump has repeatedly urged be fired. FCC Chairman Carr defends the review, saying broadcasters using public airwaves face obligations cable and streaming don't. Disney CEO Josh D'Amaro says the company won't be told how to run its news business.
