Zambia President Cements Vote Lead as Shooting Heightens Tension
Zambia's president extended a commanding lead in the nation's election, though a shootout at the home of the main opposition leader raised tensions in Africa's second-largest copper producer. Hakainde Hichilema won 2.43 million votes in 192 of the country's 226 constituencies announced by the Electoral Commission of Zambia on Monday evening. His closest rival, Brian Mundubile, garnered 1.46 million, it said. Voter turnout was 57.9%, less than the roughly 70% in the last general election.
