Zambia police arrest suspected militia members and opposition figures in Lusaka

News.az · back to the audit
Zambian police have arrested suspected militia members and several other people of interest during an operation in the capital Lusaka, with authorities saying high-grade military weapons and ammunition were seized at the scene. Secretary to the Cabinet Patrick Kangwa announced early Monday that those detained "had been under surveillance for several years over alleged links to military plans involving foreign nationals" and illegal training camps. The operation recovered "restricted, high-grade military weapons and the apprehension of suspected members of the militia" plus other individuals, Kangwa stated. Eleven people were apprehended at the scene. Kangwa confirmed arrestees would "be allowed access to their families and lawyers." Among those arrested was Brian Mundubile, the opposition National Reconciliation Party for Unity and Prosperity (NRPUP) presidential candidate and one of 12 main challengers to President Hakainde Hichilema. Also detained: George Chisanga (NRPUP presidential spokesman), Trevor Mwamba (United National Independence Party faction leader), and Patrick Mwansa (married to former President Edgar Lungu's daughter).
