Police in Zambia apprehended suspected militia members and persons of interest in an operation at a premises in the capital Lusaka, the government announced early Monday.

The operation resulted in the seizure of restricted, high-grade military weapons and the apprehension of suspected members of the militia and other persons found at the scene, while others fled and their whereabouts were unknown.

The persons of interest had been under surveillance over the last few years, with some individuals connected to military plans involving foreign nationals and illegal military training camps which posed a threat to state security.

Among those apprehended was Brian Mundubile, the opposition National Reconciliation Party for Unity and Progress presidential candidate.
