Mass grave with 25 bodies found in Sudan's Kurmuk after army retakes town

Sudanese armed forces discovered at least 25 bodies in a mass grave in southeastern Blue Nile State's town of Kurmuk, approximately one month following the army's recovery of the area after intense fighting. The grave was located during operations in Kurmuk's northeastern section. According to local commissioner Abdel Aty Mohamed al-Faki, it included the remains of children, women and hospital staff. Al-Faki stated the victims were executed near Jebel Fankat, a hilltop position the RSF had used to launch drone attacks. Officials attribute the killings to the Rapid Support Forces (RSF). Al Jazeera correspondent Almigdad al-Ruhaid characterized the discovery as significant and disturbing, noting that local authorities have accused the Rapid Support Forces of executing them during its occupation. The RSF has provided no response to the accusations. The discovery occurs amid ongoing RSF attacks in the region and reflects broader violence attributed to the paramilitary group across multiple Sudanese locations since April 2023.
