Judge dismisses Trump administration lawsuit alleging Harvard failed Jewish students

A federal judge dismissed a lawsuit filed by President Donald Trump's administration claiming Harvard University failed to protect Jewish and Israeli students from harassment on campus.

US District Judge Richard Stearns in Boston ruled on Thursday that the Trump administration's March lawsuit had not adequately demonstrated an ongoing violation of federal civil rights law. The judge found that allegations focused primarily on incidents during 2023-24 protests related to Israel's Gaza conflict, with only scattered incidents reported in March 2025 that were "too isolated and episodic" to constitute systematic civil rights violations.

The government had claimed Harvard violated Title VI of the Civil Rights Act of 1964, which prohibits discrimination based on race, color, and national origin in federally funded programs.

Kenneth L. Marcus, CEO of the Louis D. Brandeis Center for Human Rights under Law and former US Assistant Secretary of Education, criticized the ruling's implications: "The rule applied in this decision would make it significantly more challenging for the Justice Department to win future civil rights cases" by raising enforcement standards.

The judge determined the lawsuit inadequately alleged university failures following a June 2025 government notice regarding Title VI compliance. Neither the White House nor Harvard immediately responded to requests for comment.
