Elections in Zambia: 2026 General Elections

IFES (International Foundation for Electoral Systems) · back to the audit
Registered voters: 8,786,300 (4,665,431 female and 4,120,869 male). When all polling station results have been totaled, the returning officer declares the winners of National Assembly, mayor or chairperson and councilor elections. Presidential results are also announced but not declared. The results are then transmitted electronically to the National Results Centre in Lusaka. The ECZ announces the results of the presidential race at the National Results Centre as those results are received from constituencies. The presidential election returning officer (the ECZ chairperson) declares the candidate who has received more than 50 percent of the valid votes cast as the president-elect. If no candidate meets this requirement, then a second (run-off) election must be held within 37 days.
