Zambia gears up for elections as excitement builds

Zambians head to the polls

With just under 24 hours before Zambians head to the polls, excitement is building up amongst citizens.

About 8 million registered voters are expected to cast their ballots on August 13, when the country holds presidential and parliamentary elections.

The vote comes amid concerns of high cost of living and unemployment.

Economist Kelvin Chisanga says Zambia has entered this political period with a much stronger macroeconomic foundation, characterised by lower inflation, improved foreign exchange reserves, progress in debt restructuring and renewed investor confidence.

He says however, the real economic test is whether this stability can now going forward translate into tangible improvements and benefits in citizens' lives.
