Democratic Gov. Tony Evers is not seeking a third term, leaving an open race to succeed him. Four candidates are actively running for the Democratic nomination: state Rep. Francesca Hong, a democratic socialist; Milwaukee County Executive David Crowley, who is endorsed by Evers; former Wisconsin Department of Administration secretary Joel Brennan; and state Sen. Kelda Roys.

AP Decision Team updates

Aug. 12, 3:39 AM: The AP declared Crowley the winner once Hong conceded the race, removing the possibility of a recount in the exceptionally close race. At the time of the call, Crowley led by around 3,000 votes.

Aug. 12, 2:52 AM: An estimated 99% of votes have been counted in Milwaukee County and the race remains tight, with Crowley leading by less than half a percentage point.

Aug. 12, 2:00 AM: Around 28,000 absentee ballots in Milwaukee were delayed in counting because of a human error in uploading the results. Milwaukee County is the most populous in the state and Crowley, who serves as county executive, has maintained a slight lead there throughout the night.
