U.S. President Donald Trump on Monday demanded Iran pay compensation for the people he said it had killed in wars, attacks and protests, Trump, on Truth Social: "asking for compensation for the damage done to them during the last five month Military Conflict" ... "an interesting idea because now I am likewise demanding compensation from Iran." Trump, to reporters at the White House: "We're going to ask for money for the damage they've done over a 50-year period," and "So, if there's damages to be paid, I think Iran should pay those damages." Trump, Truth Social: "Iran should be responsible for the damages and death caused to the people of Lebanon, Syria, Yemen, and Gaza!" Trump claimed "about 52,000 protesters had been killed as of six weeks ago." The US-based Human Rights Activists News Agency reported about 7,000 deaths in February, including around 6,500 protesters. The demand was Trump's answer to conditions Tehran set for any deal (compensation, sanctions relief, assurances against future military threats). Iran said it was nearing a final pact with Oman defining new shipping lanes through the Strait of Hormuz but insisted the U.S. must meet conditions before reopening the waterway.
