Terrorism investigation after drone with explosives found at German airport

Reuters (wire, via NewsNation/NewsBreak reprint) · back to the audit
German authorities have opened a counterterrorism investigation after a drone carrying explosives was found at Leipzig/Halle Airport, a cargo and military logistics hub, in what the interior minister has called a hybrid attack.

The drone was found close to a group of Ukrainian An-124s; one Ukrainian plane was reportedly carrying a payload of military ammunition, per Sueddeutsche Zeitung.

In 2024, incendiary devices were found in parcels, some found at a DHL warehouse in Leipzig, and a series of unauthorized drone overflights at German military facilities, energy terminals, seaports, and logistics companies that police say could have been organized by Russian agents.

Russia's embassy in Berlin did not respond to a request for comment; Russia has denied involvement in the 2024 parcel incidents and drone overflights.
