President Donald Trump signed an executive order on Monday restructuring the childhood vaccine schedule based on the hypothesis that the number of vaccines that children in the United States receive is the reason for rising rates of autism.

Trump's executive order cut the number of vaccines that children receive from 18 to 11, following recommendations made last year by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. It's also recommending breaking up the combined measles, mumps, and rubella, or MMR, vaccine.

Trump said during the signing ceremony on Monday afternoon that the increase in autism cases to 1 in 31 children in the U.S. is likely due to the number of vaccines American children receive in each visit to the doctor in their first year of life, contradicting decades of scientific research on vaccine safety.
