Republicans punt budget for reconciliation package into the fall
Senate Republicans abandoned plans Friday night to try to take up a budget resolution for a third reconciliation package, bowing to the reality that they lacked enough votes for it. Senate Republicans scrapped a planned procedural vote on a budget resolution after a late-night meeting in Thune's office and a call with Trump. The resolution — mirroring the House's $95 billion framework — would have provided $60B defense, $13B intelligence, $12B farm aid, and $20B for voter ID, instructing 11 committees. "There was a concern whether or not we could actually pass the budget resolution tonight," said Sen. Ron Johnson, R-Wis. Johnson said the plan allowed up to $150B unoffset for maximum flexibility. "Don't take the vote tonight, and just work diligently through August and September..." "We're not giving up," Johnson said. "I mean, we need to fund [the] military, I believe."
