Iranian officials are seeking to bar US Navy warships from passing through the Strait of Hormuz as part of negotiations on an agreement to reopen the waterway, the Wall Street Journal reported on Friday, citing people familiar with the talks.
US officials told mediators that Washington will not accept Iranian restrictions or tolls on shipping through the strait. The draft agreement would temporarily establish an inbound lane near Iran and an outbound lane near Oman, while the Trump administration would lift its blockade on Iranian ports if Tehran opened the waterway without impediments, according to the report.
US actions would remain performance-based and tied to Iran's implementation of its commitments, the US official told Reuters.
Washington and Tehran remain divided over efforts to end the conflict, with the Strait of Hormuz at the center of competing military and diplomatic calculations. Recent reports have offered conflicting accounts of whether an agreement to reopen the waterway is imminent.
There has been progress between Oman and Iran over the strait and a deal is expected soon, Reuters reported Friday, citing a US official.
The official said the US would lift its blockade of Iranian ports once an agreement was announced to restore commercial shipping through the strait without impediments.
