Abdul El-Sayed has won Michigan's slugfest of a Democratic Senate primary, NBC News projects, clinching the nomination in a close race over Rep. Haley Stevens and establishing a Midwest beachhead for a progressive left on the march this midterm cycle.

Republicans hold 53 Senate seats and Democrats need to flip four. NRSC ran a digital ad touting El-Sayed's progressive credentials and Sanders endorsement. Per AdImpact, Stevens and allies outspent El-Sayed nearly nine-to-one on advertising. Third candidate Mallory McMorrow dropped out last month.
