Progressive, anti-Israel candidate Abdul El-Sayed has won Michigan's Democratic US Senate nomination, eking out a tight victory in Tuesday's primary against moderate US Rep. Haley Stevens in a race that largely focused on the candidates' differing views on Israel.

Now faces tough race vs. Republican opponent in swing state.

The race remained tight throughout Tuesday night, with a winner not declared until Wednesday morning, US time.

With more than 95 percent of the votes counted by Wednesday morning, the Associated Press's tally showed El-Sayed with some 48.5% of the vote and Stevens with 47.5%.

The winner will face Republican Mike Rogers in November in a race critical to Democrats' hopes of regaining control of the US Senate.

Stevens, a four-term congresswoman, focused on manufacturing and the economy. She stressed her past victories in tough races, saying she would be best positioned to beat Rogers.

AIPAC and its affiliates spent more than $30 million supporting Stevens, a stalwart backer of the Jewish state.
