KYIV, Ukraine, Aug 5, 2026 (BSS/AFP) - Russian missile and drone strikes killed at least 17 people and wounded dozens more in Kyiv and the surrounding region overnight, authorities said Wednesday. Kyiv was unable to shoot down any of the Russian missiles; a smoke cloud hung over the capital at sunrise and fires broke out in several locations, with over 40 people wounded. We've gotten used to waking up thinking, 'we were lucky today,' and that's very scary. Ukraine's air force said it shot down 98 of the 115 drones fired overnight but none of the missiles. Eight people were killed at a train station on Kyiv's eastern edge, three at a postal sorting centre, and one employee died when an Epicentr logistics hub burned to the ground. The head of the capital's military administration called it one of the most tragic attacks on the Kyiv region. Moscow said it struck centres involved in storing and delivering weapons and military cargo and in producing/distributing drones.
