Iran Says Hormuz Talks Underway After Trump Calls Off Strikes
(Bloomberg) -- Iran suggested negotiations to get more ships moving through the Strait of Hormuz are making progress, after President Donald Trump called off what he said was a major attack on the Islamic Republic.
Oil fell Monday, with Brent crude down about 4.5% to just over $83 a barrel, after Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi said discussions between Tehran and Oman over strait management are in the final stages.
Baghaei on talks being a "temporary" route for ship safety: "We are not currently negotiating with the United States."
Trump said a deal to open the waterway "may be close"; he said mediators and Iran must "rapidly make a deal" including the "immediate, complete, and total opening" of the strait and "an end to Iran's nuclear threat."
Trump said he scrapped strikes - "the likes of which" he claimed "not seen since World War II" - after lobbying from Iran and Middle Eastern states including Saudi Arabia, the UAE, and Qatar.
Bloomberg previously reported Muscat and Tehran were discussing reopening the "middle passage" through Hormuz, which Iran has mined and which may need clearing; the chokepoint "remains all but shut," with few transponder-active ships; the US remains "locked and loaded".
