New poll reveals stunning number of Democrats who identify as democratic socialists

A significant share of Democrats now identify as democratic socialists, according to a new CNN poll. President Donald Trump and his GOP allies have repeatedly attacked Democrats for the rise of democratic socialism within the party, calling many of their rivals 'communists.' A new CNN poll, released Thursday and conducted by SRSS, found that about one-third of Democrats and Democratic-leaning adults identify as democratic socialists. According to CNN, Democrats identifying as democratic socialists tend to be younger, less likely to have a college degree, more likely to say they are extremely motivated to vote in the midterms and are more likely to have positive views of the Democratic Party. This comes as a wave of democratic socialists has won primary elections across the country, especially in New York City. New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani recently endorsed a wave of democratic socialists who each won their elections last month. Republicans, including Trump, have called Democrats 'communists' over the rise of democratic socialist candidates. The CNN poll also showed that Democrats have the edge on the generic ballot by 8 percentage points among registered voters. It also found that Americans - by a 10-point margin - are more likely to call Democrats the 'party of change' than Republicans. Last spring, Republicans had the 7-point edge on that question. It also found that 63% of Americans said Republicans focused too little on cost-of-living issues. Another 52% of Americans said Democrats were not paying enough attention to it. The CNN poll was conducted among 1,225 U.S. adults between July 23 and July 27. It has a margin of sampling error of plus or minus 3.2 percentage points.
