Donald Trump Offered $250M to Run for a Third Term

Newsweek · back to the audit
President Donald Trump said he was offered $250 million to run for a third term during a light-hearted exchange with major Republican donor Miriam Adelson at the White House on Tuesday.

During the White House's annual Hanukkah reception, Trump called on Adelson, the widow of casino magnate Sheldon Adelson, to say a few words. After she made a reference to Alan Dershowitz, a prominent attorney and professor emeritus at Harvard Law School, speaking about the legal possibilities of a third term, the crowd began chanting "four more years."

Trump then relayed to the audience what Adelson had told him.

"She said, 'Think about it, I'll give you another $250 million,'" prompting laughter from the audience, to which Adelson responded, "I will give."

"Miriam gave my campaign, indirectly and directly, $250 million, she was number one," he said. "When somebody can give you $250 million, I think that we should give her the opportunity to say hello. And Miriam, make it quick, because $250 million is not what it used to be."

According to polling by The Economist/YouGov between November 28 and December 1, 45 percent of Trump voters do not want him to take office again, while 43 percent do.

The 22nd Amendment, which was added to the U.S. Constitution in 1951, says that "no person shall be elected to the office of the President more than twice."

Trump has often teased the idea of a third term, including by selling "Trump 2028" merchandise. The idea has found support among some in Trump's circle, including White House Chief of Staff Susie Wiles, who told Vanity Fair that while she didn't think Trump would try to stay in office, she added: "I think the American people would be lucky to have him for that time." White House spokesperson Abigail Jackson later told Axios the same day: "There has never been an Administration that has accomplished as much in less than one year than the Trump Administration. The American people would be lucky to have President Trump in office for even longer."
