Alan Dershowitz tells Trump the Constitution is not 'clear' on third term

The Independent · back to the audit
Alan Dershowitz has told Donald Trump that the Constitution 'wasn't clear' on serving a third term in office, according to a new report, as the president continues to joke about running again.

According to The Wall Street Journal, Dershowitz handed a draft copy of his book — entitled "Could President Trump Constitutionally Serve A Third Term?" — to Trump during a meeting in the Oval Office, telling the president the Constitution is 'not clear' on whether he can serve a third term.

"I said 'it's not clear if a president can become a third-term president and it's not clear if it's permissible,'" Dershowitz told the Wall Street Journal.

"He found it interesting as an intellectual issue," he added. "Do I think he's going to run for a third term? No, I don't think he will run for a third term."

Dershowitz told the WSJ that he handed billionaire Trump supporter Miriam Adelson a copy of his book. While glancing at the book, she said, 'Is this real? Oh my god, I hope this can happen.'

Later, during a Hanukkah celebration at the White House, Adelson recalled the conversation and said, 'Alan, I agree with you.' 'So we can do it,' she added.

While speaking at the white House event, Trump said that Adelson had "offered to give him another $250 million" for a potential third-term run.

Dershowitz, now 88, also represented Jeffrey Epstein and was involved in negotiating his controversial 2008 plea deal. He has come under increased scrutiny in recent months after a cache of unsealed documents tied to a lawsuit between Epstein victim Virginia Giuffre and Ghislaine Maxwell linked Dershowitz to Epstein and his associates.

The 22nd Amendment of the Constitution bars any president from being elected more than twice.
