Trump assassination attempts fuel surge in patriots joining Secret Service

The Times of London · back to the audit
The US Secret Service has seen a dramatic increase in applications in the wake of assassination attempts on President Trump, which former leaders attribute to 'a growing sense of patriotism'.

The Times filed a freedom of information request to the Department of Homeland Security, which oversees the Secret Service. Figures show the service received 117,595 applications from the day Trump took office for his second term on January 20, 2025, to May 26 of this year. It represented a 30 per cent increase on the 90,185 applications submitted from President Biden's inauguration on January 20, 2021, to May 26, 2022.

Sean Curran, the director of the Secret Service, said the agency had investigated roughly 10,000 threats against the president and other protected officials during the first half of this year, compared with about 7,000 during the same period in 2025.

They are aiming to enlist 4,000 new employees by 2028, increasing the agency's size by about 20 per cent to more than 10,000 for the first time.
