The 2028 presidential cycle has not begun yet. But if you pay attention to the polling in states that are likely to be early in the cycle — the Democrats have not set their primary schedule yet — the leading candidate on the Democratic side in the Granite State of New Hampshire isn't former Vice President Kamala Harris or California Governor Gavin Newsom. Among likely 2028 Democratic primary voters, 22 percent say they would vote for Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez if the election was held today and 21 percent would vote for Pete Buttigieg. Less than 10 percent say they would vote for Arizona senator Mark Kelly (9 percent), California governor Gavin Newsom (8 percent), Vermont senator Bernie Sanders (6 percent), or former vice president Kamala Harris (5 percent). Yes, it's just one poll, it's super-early, and no one is really thinking about 2028 yet . . . but the notion of AOC running strong among the party's left wing and starting out the primary in the top tier doesn't seem all that outlandish.
