The former Manchester mayor becomes the U.K's seventh prime minister in a decade, after his predecessor, Keir Starmer, resigned in June. Burnham, widely considered farther to the left than Starmer, has called for the U.K. government to take greater control of public services, including water and energy, and to tax the wealthy. Burnham also took a stronger position than Starmer against Israel's war in Gaza, and indicated a willingness to impose sanctions.
