Three US Troops Killed and One Missing in Escalating Iran Conflict

A U.S. service member was killed in action in Iraq on Saturday during a controlled detonation of unexploded ordnance from a downed Iranian one-way attack drone, U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM) announced Sunday in an X post. A second service member sustained minor injuries in the incident and remains under medical care.

This marks the third U.S. military fatality in recent days, following a Friday attack in Jordan that claimed the lives of two service members and injured four others. The Department of Defense identified the casualties as 1st Lt. Tyler James Feehan, 25, of Ewa Beach, Hawaii and Pvt. Isabella Gonzales, 19, of Carrollton, Texas. It states Feehan was killed in action on July 18, while Gonzales was killed in action during an enemy attack on July 17, at Muwaffaq Salti Air Base, Jordan.

The attack brought the total number of U.S. military fatalities in the conflict to 17, according to data reviewed by Newsweek. More than 430 service members have been wounded.

President Donald Trump defended the latest U.S. strikes on Iran and vowed further retaliation for attacks that kill American troops. "Every time Iran kills an American Soldier they will pay for that killing many times over!" Trump wrote on Truth Social on Monday. "This directive has been passed on to Secretary of War, Pete Hegseth, Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, Daniel Caine, and every Leader in the Military."

In response to Friday's incident, Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth wrote in an X post: "Godspeed, heroes. Their sacrifice only stiffens our resolve."

Senator John Fetterman, a Pennsylvania Democrat, wrote in a post on X Saturday: "This is awful and tragic news. These two servicemembers represent the very best of us and who we lost as heroes."
