Trump to impose new tariffs on Canadian exports over auto, dairy and alcohol disputes

U.S. President Donald Trump is escalating his trade war against Canada, imposing 50-per-cent tariffs on a range of goods to hit back at Ottawa for retaliating against his previous tariffs. Tariffs affect nearly US$20-billion in Canadian goods, roughly 5% of exports to the U.S.; take effect August 19; no USMCA exemptions. Targeted products include beer, wine, whisky, milk, whey, lactose, honey, bedsheets, hockey sticks, cement, chandeliers, fake beards, and Christmas ornaments. Prime Minister Mark Carney: "This is the latest in a series of unilateral U.S. trade actions that began with the U.S. imposing a series of tariffs in direct violation of the USMCA."
