Congressman says SAVE Act fight is fake, GOP has no plan to actually pass it

WASHINGTON (TNND) — Kentucky GOP Rep. Thomas Massie said Monday that Republicans have no plan of passing the SAVE Act and the fighting is all fake.

"REPUBLICANS HAVE NO INTENTION OF PASSING THE SAVE ACT," he wrote on X. "Voter ID polls well, so GOP is using Democrat intransigence to score political points. That's it. This week we vote on a CR to fund government thru DECEMBER which means the plan to attach SAVE to an approps bill is a bust."

An X user responded to Massie and said she was furious with the GOP for not getting behind it.

"The SAVE ACT fight is fake, always was," Massie responded to her. "It's designed to make you furious. There is no plan to pass it. Republican politicians are playing you. It's designed to distract you from increased debt, war, inflation, and further usurpations of your rights."

The SAVE Act is short for the Safeguard American Voter Eligibility Act. The legislation would require proof of U.S. citizenship when people register to vote in federal elections.

President Donald Trump has been urging the Senate to pass the legislation for months after it passed in the House.

When the Senate failed to pass it, Trump didn't sign the bipartisan housing bill in protest.

North Carolina GOP Rep. Thom Tillis threatened to stall the act last week and has said the legislation is impossible to implement before the 2026 midterms.
