Senate Democrat calls for Trump impeachment after election claims
Sen. Ed Markey, a Democrat from Massachusetts, late Thursday called on Congress to impeach President Trump after the president claimed during a primetime address that forces that stole the 2020 presidential election are still at work and threaten the integrity of the 2026 midterm election.
Trump used words such as "rigged and stolen" and "corrupt" and "cover-up" and cited some recently declassified documents to support his alarming claims though critics in both parties say he still failed to substantiate his central contention that U.S. elections are marred by widespread fraud.
"Trump must be impeached for undermining and subverting our free and fair elections," Markey declared in a post on X, the social media platform.
"And when he sends ICE agents to the polls, then we must turn civic action into civil disobedience and take to the streets. Sit in. Protest. Withhold our labor. Everything must be on the table," Markey urged.
Trump earlier Thursday evening said that newly released documents show that during a period of five years starting during the 2020 election cycle, the Chinese government acquired 220 million U.S. voter files.
Critics of Trump's claims, however, point out that information on U.S. voters are publicly available or can be purchased from states.
Markey, one of the most progressive members of the Senate Democratic caucus, called for Trump to be removed from office in April after Trump threatened to wipe out the civilization of Iran if its leaders did not reopen the Strait of Hormuz.
"With each passing day, it becomes increasingly apparent that Donald Trump is unstable and a clear and present danger, not just to the American people but to the world. He must be removed from office before he causes incalculable and unfathomable harm," Markey said at the time.
Markey urged the House to pass articles of impeachment and the Senate to vote to convict and remove Trump from office. He also called on Trump's Cabinet and Vice President Vance to invoke the 25th Amendment to remove the president from office.
