In Iraq, huge crowds mourning Iranian leader reveal limits of U.S. role
Some officials said the outpouring of grief was intended to show the continuing close ties between Iraq and Iran despite U.S. efforts to hold sway in Baghdad.
Funeral rites for the Iranian supreme leader, Ali Khamenei, shifted on Wednesday to neighboring Iraq and the holy city of Najaf where Shiite Muslims from around the world are often brought to be buried near the shrine of Imam Ali, cousin and son-in-law of the Islamic prophet Muhammad.
