Trump administration asks Congress for $87.6 billion in supplemental spending, with majority for Iran war
President Donald Trump's administration sent Congress an $87.6 billion supplemental budget request on Wednesday, with the majority being directed for the war with Iran.
The supplemental budget request sent to House Speaker Mike Johnson includes more than $67 billion for the Defense Department. It includes $21 billion for munitions, $17.3 billion for operational costs, $2.4 billion for drones, $1.7 billion for readiness and $12.1 billion for other classified programs.
The supplemental fund also addresses $1.4 billion in responding to the Ebola outbreak in central Africa and $11.1 billion to support American farmers.
During congressional testimony last month, Jay Hurst, the Pentagon comptroller, told lawmakers that the total cost of the war had risen to about $29 billion. The majority of that was related to operational costs for deployed forces and did not include the cost to repair or rebuild U.S. military bases damaged during the conflict, U.S. officials said.
The Pentagon's current fiscal year budget is about $1 trillion.
