Trump Faces Off With GOP Senators on Voting Bill and Iran War
In surprise move, president says housing bill is 'of minor importance' and that he won't sign it until Congress passes his voter-eligibility legislation
WASHINGTON - President Trump abruptly canceled plans to sign bipartisan housing legislation, saying he would refuse to take action on the measure until Congress passes a long-stalled bill he has championed that would impose strict new voter-eligibility rules.
The move Wednesday morning ratcheted up tensions with Senate Republicans just ahead of a lunch with the president on Capitol Hill. Many GOP senators have told him the voting bill, called the SAVE America Act, has no path to passage and have instead pushed the White House to extricate the country from the Iran war and to show more focus on the economy.
