Switzerland confirms cancellation of Burgenstock U.S. - Iran talks a day after Trump-Pezeshkian peace memorandum
Planned follow-up negotiations between the United States and Iran in Switzerland have been called off, raising fresh doubts over the durability of a recently signed interim accord between the two countries.
Switzerland's Federal Department of Foreign Affairs confirmed that talks scheduled for Friday in Burgenstock would not go ahead as expected. The cancellation comes just a day after U.S. President Donald Trump and Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian signed a memorandum of understanding intended to pave the way for a permanent peace agreement following months of heightened tensions.
The White House said Vice President JD Vance would no longer travel to Switzerland, citing unresolved logistical complications. A spokesperson added that while the US delegation stood ready to depart at short notice, arrangements for the technical discussions had yet to be finalised, describing negotiations of this nature as inherently complex and unpredictable.
The abrupt change in plans has underscored the fragile nature of the accord. Analysts warned that the memorandum represents only an initial step towards a broader and more comprehensive settlement, particularly regarding Iran's nuclear programme.
However, some analysts have criticised the terms of the arrangement, arguing that it strengthens Tehran's strategic position in the Gulf while doing little to curb its long-term nuclear ambitions. Critics within the United States have also accused the administration of conceding too much, claims rejected by both Trump and Vance.
