Is the Nuclear Family Dead? The tables, the series and the hashes

Every series behind the piece, with the Census, CDC and BLS table IDs, the years used, the source URLs, the method for each computed number, and the sha256 of each raw file the desk downloaded on 6 October 2026.

Scope: these are prevalence and change tables. Nothing here measures how any family does, and the desk draws no conclusion about outcomes. Census counts before 1980 include unrelated subfamilies (FM-1 note). Own children = biological, step and adopted children under 18 in the household. Census tables are CPS ASEC unless stated; the 1960 children row is the 1960 decennial census. Latest Census historical tables: December 2025 (HH-1, HH-3, HH-4, HH-6, FM-1, CH-1, MS-1, MS-2); November 2024 (FM-3, MC1 through 2023). Detailed 2025 tables (C3 and others) were not yet posted, so the married-parents series ends in 2023.

Households and families, 1960-2025 (the desk's computation)

Percent of all households (HH-1 total). Married with own children = FM-1 married-couple families with own children under 18; without = HH-1 married couples minus that; one-parent = FM-1; living alone = HH-4 one-person households; other = remainder. Counts in thousands.

Census CPS ASEC, tables HH-1 (households by type), FM-1 (families by presence of own children under 18) and HH-4 (households by size), as computed by the desk; 1960 to 2025. Married couple with own children under 18 = FM-1 married-couple families with own children; no-children = HH-1 married couples minus that; one-parent = FM-1 one-parent families; living alone = HH-4 one-person households. FM-1 counts before 1980 include unrelated subfamilies, so the 1960 to 1975 blue segments run slightly high. Own children include biological, step and adopted children under 18.
