The Fox watch spot: tape counts, definitions and limits

Companion to the editorial. The desk’s own counts of tagged commercial blocks on its recorded Fox News and CNN feeds, by day, with the method and the places the count can be wrong. The tape is a receipt: no transcript text is quoted here or in the piece.

Limits. The recording is of SiriusXM audio channels, not the television channels; the desk does not know whether their commercial breaks match. Counts are of language-model-tagged blocks in machine transcripts, so they can run high (one spot split in two) or low (a spot missed). The tape does not show who bought the slots, whose voice is in the spot, or where a coin paid to the store goes.

Method

Feeds recorded: SiriusXM channels carrying Fox News (114), CNN (116), MS NOW (118), BBC World Service (120) and POTUS Politics (124), 06:00 to 23:00 Eastern daily. A transcriber produces text; a model segments it into blocks and tags advertisers and categories; creatives are de-duplicated by transcript similarity. A block counts as a “Trump-watch spot” when its creative’s advertiser tag is a Trump Watches / GetTrumpWatches variant, or its tag is Trump or Trump Organization in a merchandise, retail, jewelry or luxury category and its transcript carries the store’s name or address. Five creatives whose transcripts mention the store only because of bleed from the neighbouring spot (tagged psychic services, legal, nutrition) were excluded by hand. A “Kids Guide spot” is a block whose creative’s transcript carries the product’s name or address or its opening line. Days are Eastern.

The BBC World Service and POTUS Politics feeds also returned 0 under the same method. MS NOW is not compared. Merging blocks that start within 10 seconds of the previous block’s end gives 104 groups; neither figure is validated against the audio; 13 of the 143 blocks run under 10 seconds. All 143 blocks start between 12:00 and 22:59 Eastern. Transcribed hours, 28 September to 11 October: Fox 237.1, CNN 235.9; ad blocks: Fox 5,586, CNN 5,941.

Before 28 September

15 to 19 July: 52 tagged blocks on the Fox feed. 20 July to 27 September: 0 across 70 days and 1,128 transcribed Fox hours. Tape began 15 July.

Payment words

58 of the 143 blocks, all 28 September to 6 October, belong to creatives whose machine transcripts contain the words meme coin; from 7 to 9 October, 46 blocks were tagged and none belongs to such a creative. A transcription gap and a changed spot cannot be told apart on this tape.
