# Alaska and Mississippi Are Still Uncalled. The Margins and the Blame Diverge.

## The records agree on the shape of the morning — Democrats hold both chambers, two Senate races are open, Republicans are arguing in public — and then part ways on the arithmetic underneath one race and on how much of the loss its own leadership will own.

Wednesday morning left two Senate races open and one party arguing with itself in print. Mississippi and Alaska had not been called; the Republican blame contest had. Eighteen frozen records carry the morning, and this brief files the two spreads inside them — a numeric one under Mississippi, a rhetorical one under the war — without resolving either.

── ANGLE: the uncalled races · what the corpus agrees happened ──
Reuters: "The outcome of the US Senate race in Alaska was unclear on Wednesday, one day after Democrats scored a sweeping victory in the US midterm elections that delivered them control of the House of Representatives and the Senate."
POLITICO: "Democrats have taken back control of the Senate. But two marquee races remain too close to call - and may not be decided any time soon."
The Independent (UK): "Key U.S. Senate contests remain tight, including in Mississippi where Democrat Scott Colom leads Republican Sen. Cindy Hyde-Smith by a few dozen votes, and in Alaska where Democrat Mary Peltola leads incumbent Republican Dan Sullivan in a potential ranked-choice scenario."

Alaska will not tabulate ranked-choice preferences until Nov. 18, per Reuters. Both races are uncalled. This brief calls neither. Not every frozen record speaks to the races — several carry only the blame argument — and the brief reports each record for what it holds.

Now Mississippi, where the same Wednesday morning produced two different races.

── ANGLE: Mississippi · one race, two margins ──
The Hill: "With nearly all ballots counted, Colom led Hyde-Smith by a little more than 2,000 votes — 461,370 to 459,201 — as of early Wednesday morning, according to Decision Desk HQ."
POLITICO: "According to the latest count, Colom leads Hyde by just 43 votes with more than 900,000 ballots cast."
Washington Examiner: "Colom had received 462,821 votes, or 48.9%, compared with Hyde-Smith's 462,778 votes, also 48.9%, as of Wednesday morning."
Newsmax: "With more than 900,000 ballots cast, Colom held a razor-thin lead of just 43 votes, according to the latest count."

The desk's arithmetic is modest but obedient. The Examiner's figures: 462,821 minus 462,778 is 43. The Hill's: 461,370 minus 459,201 is 2,169 — accurately described as "a little more than 2,000". Each version can be a faithful report of a different tally — The Hill names Decision Desk HQ; the 43-vote records point at no named vendor in these spans — and nothing in the corpus sets the two ledgers beside each other. The brief reports the spread and declines to choose a bookkeeper.

Alaska is friendlier, if only because the records there describe their uncertainty rather than duel over the digits.

── ANGLE: Alaska · a lead, a toss-up, and a ranked-choice wait ──
Washington Examiner: "With approximately 74% of the vote counted, Peltola had received 102,701 votes, or 48.2%, compared with Sullivan's 102,075 votes, or 47.9%"
CBS News: "With around three-quarters of the vote in as of Wednesday morning, the race remains a toss-up, according to CBS News estimates."
Newsmax: "Peltola held a narrow lead of several hundred votes, with approximately three-quarters of ballots counted."
Reuters: "Officials will not run the ranked-choice tabulation until November 18."
Reuters: "while retired teacher Sullivan has so far won about 3,600 votes, or 1.7%, according to tallies compiled by Reuters and USA Today, which are partnering this year to collect live election results."

A 626-vote lead at 74 percent counted and a race called a toss-up are not rival claims; they are the same situation described at two temperatures. Reuters adds the detail this desk flags before anything else in the Alaska file: there are two Sullivans on the ballot, the incumbent senator and the retired teacher whose 3,600 votes Reuters tallies separately. A reader who merges the two men will conclude the incumbent taught school. He did not. This desk keeps them apart.

Then the blame file, where the corpus's language does its most careful work.

── ANGLE: blame · what the president said, and what the vice president said he said ──
The Hill: "Trump told The Wall Street Journal that the Middle East conflict, now in its eighth month, "was a piece of it" in an election night interview."
CNN: "While Vance said in his post that Trump had also blamed the Iran conflict for GOP losses, Trump only said it was "part of it.""
CNN: ""I think it's largely true because it drove the gasoline up a little bit short term," Trump said at the site of his White House ballroom when asked about Vance's statement."
The Hill: "Trump told the Journal that he thought high fuel costs were the biggest factor behind his party's losses Tuesday."
Reuters: "But Trump's comments were far more measured, saying the Iran war was only one of multiple reasons."
Al Jazeera: ""The reason we lost is the war. The president himself said so last night," he wrote in a lengthy post on X."
Reuters: ""The reason we lost is the war," Vance said on X."
Fox News: "The main problem is that many people who voted for Trump/Vance in 2024 voted for Democrats in 2026"

This block is the brief's center, and it does not reduce to a clean fraction-versus-whole. Trump's own words, as carried by The Hill and CNN, put the war at "a piece of it" and "part of it" — and, in the same CNN record, call Vance's assessment "largely true" while The Hill has him ranking fuel costs as "the biggest factor". Vance's post, as carried by Al Jazeera, asserts "The president himself said so last night" — a firmer sentence than any record here attributes to Trump's own mouth. Reuters files the gap itself: Trump's comments were "far more measured". The offset is on the page. The brief renders nothing on top of it.

The rest of the party supplies its own denominators.

── ANGLE: blame · the party's own recriminations ──
BBC News: ""It's on him. It's not on anybody else. It's a total, complete rejection of President Trump," Bill Miller, a top Republican lobbyist in Texas, told the BBC. "This is a disaster of the first magnitude. Nobody saw it coming like this.""
PBS NewsHour (AP wire copy): "Trump tried to shift the blame away from himself during a Fox News interview that aired early Wednesday, saying Democrats "did a good job" in their campaigns and blamed GOP candidates for losses."
Newsweek: "He pointed to four actions that Republicans could have taken to mitigate Republican losses-ending the Iran war, focusing on the cost of living and inflation, putting America first and changing the U.S. relationship with Israel."
New York Post: "But anyone pushing amnesty is lying to you. The reason we lost is the war"

One filing note: the PBS NewsHour page runs Associated Press copy under a PBS flag — one dispatch, two addresses. And the Post's frozen body carries the war and the amnesty passage and, on the word "Israel", nothing at all. This desk quotes the body.

Two closes, both conditional. On Mississippi's margin: claim: which tally reflects the counted ballots · status: unresolved · confidence: the corpus holds two tallies, DDHQ's 2,169-vote margin and the 43-vote count other records call "the latest", and no record sets them side by side; high on the 24 spans that located, all verbatim from the frozen corpus, and null on the margin itself. On the blame question no desk needed to ask: the records carrying Trump's words have "a piece of it", "part of it", "largely true", and "the biggest factor", pointed at fuel costs; the record carrying Vance's has "The president himself said so last night." The offset is on the page. What the president said last night, beyond these spans, is not.
