# One Learjet, Five Descent Numbers, and No Way to Subtract Them

## A radioed rate, a computed peak, and a distance fallen in one minute are not the same measurement.

A Learjet 60 left Austin-Bergstrom International Airport on Sunday afternoon, November 1, bound for North Eleuthera in the Bahamas, and struck a residential street near Cresthaven, Florida, at about 12:50 p.m. Nine people aboard died; Reuters carries the FAA statement identifying the flight, and NBC News carries the agency's placement of the crash "near Cresthaven, a residential neighborhood in Palm Beach County." That much is background.

The reason is the fall. The Guardian reports that the plane "entered a steep dive, first 10,000 ft per minute, then 20,000 ft per minute and up to 30,000 ft per minute," citing air traffic control recordings and flight tracking data. Reuters reports that Flightradar24's data put the descent above 32,000 feet per minute at one point. CNN reports that "The jet descended 27,000 feet over the course of one minute," citing ADS-B Exchange. The numbers do not support a subtraction across them.

Here is the whole finding, plainly. The Guardian's figures are rates carried in its account of the plunge, in sequence, from air traffic control recordings and flight tracking data, while the situation deteriorated. The Reuters figure is a peak that one tracking service computed afterward from its own feed. The CNN figure is a distance fallen across a stated interval, from a different service's feed. A rate reported, a rate computed, and a distance traveled are three instruments pointed at the same plunge. None subtracts from another, and the 32,000 peak is a tracking service's computation and the Guardian's "up to 30,000" is drawn from recordings and tracking data, which makes them parallel estimates.

The numbers do not add up because they are not one measurement: a rate reported over the radio, a computed peak, and a distance fallen over a stated interval. No subtraction across them yields a unit, and that is the finding.

Two more figures travel with the five and must be kept out of the subtraction. The New York Post, citing BocaNewsNow, reports the plane "took a sharp right turn before nosediving from 8,000 feet into the ground" — an altitude at a last fix, not a rate. And the cruise altitude appears in near-identical wire copy: Sky News prints "35,000ft" and "2,000ft"; Newsmax prints "35,000 feet" and "2,000 feet." Both describe the same pre-plunge state — one measurement reported twice, not two confirmations.

On cause, PBS NewsHour, Newsmax and Townhall are careful where they could easily not be. PBS NewsHour, on the AP wire, reports that "the pilot reported ice accumulating on the jet and turbulence that was jolting it by as much as 700 feet, according to air traffic control recordings captured by LiveATC.net" — reported over the radio, which is all the recordings can show. Newsmax carries an expert's caution: "There are many potential factors and the NTSB will consider all of them, including how the pilot responded to the icing and turbulence reported over the radio." Townhall files the shortest article prose, and the plainest: "We don't know why it crashed."

CBS News reports flatly that "No one on the ground was injured, Gov. Ron DeSantis told reporters at a news conference." USA TODAY's earlier snapshot reads "It was not immediately known if there had been any injuries or fatalities among people on the ground" — a snapshot taken while the ground toll was still unknown, not a difference of fact. The street is fixed twice: BBC News quotes the sheriff's office on "Military Trail, a six-lane road that features businesses and restaurants," and Fox News reports the closure "between Cresthaven Boulevard and 10th Avenue North." The distance to Mar-a-Lago is two hedged approximations that do not compete: The Independent prints "roughly eight miles"; BBC News prints "some nine miles (14 km)." Both are hedged and rounded. The Associated Press wire opens its account with the scene: "A business jet carrying nine people nose-dived into a South Florida neighborhood Sunday and erupted into a giant fireball that appeared to just miss homes before crashing near a busy roadway, creating a giant fiery crater in the pavement."
