# One Poll, Seven Points, and Where Each Masthead Got Its Number

## A coverage brief: one Suffolk University poll, 47–40 for the Democrat, filed as news by two center outlets, a passing mention by two more — and carried as a lede by no left-bucket masthead in the corpus, each wing keeping its own older numbers instead, and one release date arriving in three tellings

The strongest public number either Michigan Senate candidate has posted this fall came out this week: Abdul El-Sayed 47, Mike Rogers 40, from Suffolk University, 500 likely voters, a margin of error the pollster put at roughly 4.4 points. A seven-point lead for the Democrat, six weeks out. The desk froze nineteen records, and the number went almost nowhere: not one left-bucket body carries the Suffolk figure, and the right bucket carries it once, in passing, inside an ad story. Two center outlets ran it as news. Everyone else published polls of their own — older ones, tighter ones, occasionally kinder ones — and the finding of this brief is that circulation, not arithmetic, is the story.

No two frozen bodies assert incompatible facts about the race; the differing margins come from different pollsters on different dates, which is what polling is. The desk records what each masthead carried and what it didn't, and certifies nothing about Michigan.

First, the two outlets that carried the number as the story.

── ANGLE: the-suffolk-poll · two-dedicated-carriers ──
The Hill: "The Suffolk University poll found that 47 percent of likely Michigan voters backed El-Sayed,"
The Hill: "The Suffolk University survey included responses from 500 likely Michigan voters between September 16 and 20 with a margin of error of approximately 4.4 percentage points."
Newsweek: "gave El-Sayed a 7-point lead over Rogers, his largest margin in any September poll."

The Hill gives the survey a piece of its own; Newsweek hangs it on Kamala Harris's Detroit appearance but leads its polling section with the seven points and adds the crosstabs nobody else carries — independents at 51–35, the gender split, gun households. Both are center-bucket. That is the whole list of dedicated carriers: two.

The release date, meanwhile, arrives in three tellings, and the desk files all three without choosing.

── NAMING: release-day · monday-or-tuesday ──
The Hill: "in a new survey released Tuesday."
Newsweek: "The poll, released Monday by the Suffolk University Political Research Center,"
The Independent (UK): "A new Suffolk University poll of the Michigan Senate race on Tuesday similarly showed"

Two bodies say Tuesday — The Hill in its lede, The Independent inside a sentence that is otherwise about the Iran war — and one says Monday. The corpus carries the survey's press release in no form, so there is nothing to adjudicate with. It is recorded here the way it was reported, and it stays that way: Tuesday, Tuesday, Monday.

Then the passing mentions, where the seven points appear as scenery.

── ANGLE: passing-mentions · one-line-carriage ──
The Washington Times: "A Suffolk University poll conducted Sept. 16-20 showed Mr. El-Sayed leading Mr. Rogers by 7 points."
The Independent (UK): "A new Suffolk University poll of the Michigan Senate race on Tuesday similarly showed Republican Mike Rogers falling clearly behind his progressive Democratic opponent, Abdul El-Sayed."

The Washington Times deploys it in a graf of a story about a campaign ad narrated by David Beamer; The Independent deploys it in a single sentence of a story whose subject is the Iran war's polling. Neither is wrong — both attribute correctly, and the Times even matches the field dates. But a number that is a lede at two mastheads and a hand-wave at two others is a number whose prominence is an editorial decision made independently four times.

Now the wings, and their own instruments.

── ANGLE: the-lefts-mint · no-suffolk-on-the-left ──
CNN: "In Michigan, likely voters split about evenly between El-Sayed at 47% and Rogers at 44%, a margin that lands within the poll's margin of sampling error."
NBC News: "a Fox News poll conducted by a bipartisan pair of polling firms found El-Sayed trailing Republican nominee Mike Rogers by 4 percentage points, 51%-47%."
Washington Post: "48 percent support Democrat Abdul El-Sayed in the Senate race"

CNN's own SSRS survey shows a race inside the margin; the Post's Schar School poll, behind a paywall that stopped the fetch cold, shows three; NBC's newsletter reaches back to August for a Fox News poll with Rogers ahead. Three left-bucket newsrooms, three polls, none of them Suffolk's, and NBC's chosen instrument is a month old and from the other party's house pollster. The bucket that might be expected to amplify a +7 Democratic lead amplified its own tighter numbers instead. The corpus supports no claim about why, and the desk makes none.

The right does the same in the other metal, and twice at seven.

── ANGLE: the-rights-mint · older-kinder-numbers ──
Fox News: "According to a Fox News survey of Michigan registered voters, Rogers has the edge in the race with 51% to El-Sayed's 47%, within the survey's margin of sampling error."
Washington Examiner: "El Sayed leads Rogers by 7 points among likely voters,"
Newsmax: "The poll found 48% of likely Michigan voters support El-Sayed, while 46% back Rogers, and 4% are undecided."

Fox's Michigan poll dates to August 6–10 and shows Rogers up four; Newsmax carries an Emerson survey from mid-September at two. The right bucket thus ends up with two separate sevens in the corpus: the Times's, which is Suffolk's September figure carried in passing, and the Examiner's, which is a different seven entirely — Susquehanna's, fielded August 11–17, printed without alarm in a right-bucket body that headlines it "outperforms." Two independent Democratic +7s on the right, and the September one never rose above scenery.

The wire returned nothing. Reuters's Michigan filing is an Iran-war story; Roll Call's newsletter covers the race through cash and endorsements; AP is not in the corpus at all. The internationals mostly sat out the horserace — BBC alone cites a poll, Epic-MRA, at four points. The margin of error continues to do a great deal of the editing: CNN's race and Newsmax's race are both inside it, and both outlets say so, and both are describing the same state six weeks out.

The reads, all fifteen, in the clerk's hand:

── READ: USA TODAY · the-list ──
anchor: "Michigan: (D) El-Sayed: 48% - (R) Rogers: 45% (The Washington Post, September 17)"

confidence: high

The ledger, then: a seven-point Democratic lead, reported as itself by two center mastheads, reported as scenery by two more, and replaced by other numbers by every body on either wing but a graf and an August poll. Every outlet printed a real poll; the only thing that varied was which one a reader was given. Michigan voters who want the whole picture must buy four newspapers — a fact that was perhaps always true and is now countable.
